There is a problem however...
Back in February and March of this year, I had to change the domain for my blog due to problems with the free .co.cc domain and Facebook (see Related articles below). This change resulted in updating various directories of which I'm a member of with the new domain. With most of these directories, the change is immediate with the rest taking anywhere from a day to a couple of weeks to be manually approved.
Technorati have a different system however and one that doesn't work too well.
When you change the URL of your blog, you have to submit your new blog URL as a new listing on Technorati and claim it. Once it's claimed, you then have to inform the Technorati technical team using their temporary support system to transfer the authority (a kind of ranking system) from your old URL to the new URL.
I requested for the transfer of authority over 6 months ago (on the 14th March 2011) and after posting numerous messages over this time period, the authority from my old URL to my new URL has still NOT been transferred, even though I was given assurances back in April that this was in progress by their technical department. I've also been receiving a HTTP 500 Internal Server Error on my new URL during this time which basically means that my new blog URL is still not listed on their system. You can see this for yourself by visiting my Technorati profile and you will notice that derekjones.co is not listed.
I'm not saying that you should not list your new blog on Technorati but if you're thinking of changing anything on your current listing, you could be in for a long wait. Why is Technorati taking so long to approve blog changes? I'm not entirely sure but it's certainly very frustrating for us bloggers and something they need to look into and rectify immediately.
Have you had problems listing your blog or making changes to your current listing? Please let me know.
Note: For a comprehensive list of blog and RSS directories to submit to, see our post: Top Blog and RSS Directories
UPDATE 20th September 2011: After 6 months of waiting, Technorati's technical team have now finally transferred the authority and my new blog URL (derekjones.co) is now listed on their system. You can view the listing at: http://technorati.com/blogs/www.derekjones.co
UPDATE 23rd October 2011: I am pleased to announce that Technorati have finally changed their system to self-service and you can now update your blog URL (and feed URL) on your current listing without the need to go through the long and tedious process as mentioned above. To make changes, simply login to your Technorati account, click on the "Edit Site Info" button on your claimed blog listing and enter your new blog and/or feed URL.
To protect your blog, any changes to the blog or feed URL will include a verification process similar to that of the original claim process. Once the verification (claim) process has been completed, your listing will be updated and the authority from your old URL will automatically be transferred to your new URL.

Hi Derek, I listed my blog with Technorati in March of this year (I think?) and it only took 2 days to get the approval. Fortunately I haven't needed to change anything, so I haven't experienced any of the troubles that you've had. I hope things are soon resolved for you :)
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to here that you got your blog listing approved within 2 days Bec. I know quite a few people (including myself) in which it took weeks and even months for their blog to be listed on the Technorati system. Let's hope you don't need to change anything :-)
ReplyDeleteThere are many other directories you could try if this doesn´t work out so keep on searching for others. They should be more flexible.
ReplyDeleteDerek, I am so sorry this happened to you. Thanks for sharing your gripes. I suspect it happens to many people. I had no problem getting any of my blogs listed, maybe because I am a writer on there. What I do have a problem with though, is my wordpress blog has not updated on the site in over 6 weeks. I tried contacting someone and I heard nothing back. I also have an issue with being a writer on their site because they use adsense as you would on your own blog and I have never had any luck with them whatsoever. So getting paid is a pain in the butt. They also swear that when you are a writer on there and have your blog listed you will be getting all these new readers, bla bla bla... their site may be big but, it's very insufficient.
ReplyDeleteThis is a new info for me.Thanks for the post Derek. My blog is listed now, but just in case I change anything like you did.
ReplyDeleteI never heard of Technorati. When I clicked on your profile link I got "Page not found". Just how important is a listing with this company?
ReplyDeleteDerek, I think my blog also not listed in technorati since they are not accepting via submission tools or pinging. Today I understood how to do it after reading your post. I think I need to make a profile and it is like webmasters tool. isn't it. Thanks for the info.
ReplyDeleteEven without technorati I got the Google page rank of 3. So don't worry too much about this site. You can find thousands of directories on web. Submit to those.
Happy blogging...!!

This is also new information for me. I am off over there to have a look now. Thanks Derek.
ReplyDeleteI went to look at Technorati and thought I would try to list my blog. However, there didn't seem to be anywhere to do this. Either I am missing something or they've closed off submissions?
ReplyDeleteThank you Mattias, forjenssake, Abhisek, Anna, Techmaker and Claire for your comments.
ReplyDeleteClaire: To list your blog, you will first need to create an account with Technorati. You can do this by clicking on the "Join" link at the top of the page. Once you have done this, go to your profile page and scroll down until you see "My claimed blogs". Simply enter your blog URL within the "Start a blog claim:".
Anna: I've just tried the link on the blog post and it's working fine here and takes me directly to my profile page. Technorati is one of the main blog directories and listing your blog here can help drive traffic to your blog. I would suggest listing your blog if you haven't already done so.
Techmaker: Technorati are accepting submissions. To list your blog, just follow the instructions above.
i've been on technorati for ages and it hasnt helped me.

Thanks for the help on that Derek. I feel a bit silly that I didn't figure it out myself now! I have made the claim to have my site listed now but it says that it may take 'quite some time'.
